Lighthouse Cleaning was founded in 2013 when Virginia Broadbent identified a pressing need within her local church and the Chin Burmese community. Faced with the reality of a foreign culture as well as minimal job opportunities, the Chin Burmese community were both unequipped and ill prepared for the Australian workforce.
To help them overcome this issue, Virginia supported the Chin Burmese community in becoming professionally trained. She then actively worked to place them in suitable positions that leveraged their new training and offered them a fresh start.
And while Virginia was proud of the difference she made in her local Chin Burmese community, she also acknowledged that the dilemma these refugees faced was not an isolated incident.
For many refugees and asylum seekers, the threat of being unable to find work in a new country is an unfortunate reality. Despite coming to Australia to find work, many refugees struggle to find a job due to their restricted language skills and lack of connections. In addition to this, it’s quite common for unscrupulous business owners to take advantage of refugees and use their limited knowledge to underpay them and offer poor working conditions.
